The Big Canoe Fire Department and Thankful Thursdays

ThankfulThursdaysSince Thanksgiving 2016, the Lunch Bucket Brigade has provided lunch for the entire Big Canoe Fire Department every Thursday, all year long. Once a week, a volunteer donates lunch for 8-10 people consisting of an entree, side, bread, and dessert. For example, one lunch might be lasagna, green salad, French bread, and cookies. Another could be roast, potato salad, rolls, and a fruit plate. If home-cooked food isn’t an option, the Fire Department always welcomes prepared or restaurant alternatives.

In a recent letter, Fire Chief Ricky Jordan expressed his thanks: “The first thing I heard this morning when I arrived at the firehouse was ‘It’s Thankful Thursday; can’t wait to see what we’re having for lunch.’ The guys all look forward to the Thursday meals. It’s much more than just a meal to them; it means someone took time out of their day to show some love to them. It’s been a blessing to our guys and gals here at the station.”

On their scheduled day, volunteers should arrive between 10-11AM and leave lunch with dispatch at the fire station. Families, individuals, and clubs are encouraged to participate, and since the Fire Department has a series of rotations for staffing, all employees will benefit.

There are still several slots open for the summer months. If you are interested in providing a lunch or need more information, contact franholman@yahoo.com.
